The City of Subiaco hold an annual writing contest for young writers called the Tim Winton Award for Young Writers.
This award is open to every Western Australian school student where they are able to enter in a work of creative writing. The Tim Winton Award for Young Writers is broken up into 5 categories based on school years as follows:
Lower primary – school years one and two
Middle primary – school years three and four
Upper primary – school years five and six
Lower secondary – school years seven, eight and nine
Upper secondary – school years ten, eleven and twelve
The primary judging criteria for the Tim Winton Award for Young Writers are on the story development, themes used and quality of writing presented. Quantity of word count isn’t a factor as these awards are focused on providing the best quality work the students can present.
Tim Winton Award for Young Writers entry requirements
All entrants to the Tim Winton Award for Young Writers must be current active students in Western Australia.
Students must provide a work of creative writing at a maximum word count of 2000 words.
All students must give permission for the works provided to be used by the City of Subiaco and the award sponsors for publications and any future promotion of the writers award.

Prizes are given to the top three entries in each category. The prizes are donated by the award sponsors so they will change each year.
